Which index should I use?
IPCA — the official inflation index
Measured by IBGE, it is Brazil's official inflation gauge and the Central Bank's target reference. Use it for everyday values, contracts with no index defined and general purchasing-power comparisons.
IGP-M — the contracts index
Computed by FGV, it reacts strongly to the exchange rate and wholesale prices. It is the traditional index for rent adjustments and many contracts — it can diverge a lot from IPCA over short windows.
INPC — inflation for lower-income households
Also from IBGE, it tracks inflation for households earning 1 to 5 minimum wages, with a heavier food weight. Common in wage negotiations, pensions and court rulings.
